Fido's Charity Shop
FIDOS Charity Shop has just celebrated its second birthday but the impact it has made upon the local community would suggest it had been situated at Lawrence Weston on the outskirts of Bristol far longer.
Lesley McMahon, NASSL South West and Wales area co-ordinater and FIDOs shop manager explained:
FIDOS is an integral part of the community and provides valuable funds for NASSL. These funds can contribute to anything deemed essential for the smooth running of any of the rescues within NASSL. It could be a new roof for a horse sanctuary, computer equipment or whatever they need.
The shop is a great success because everyone in the surrounding area supports us on such a regular basis, whether this is in the form of donations or purchases. Many people have said that they couldn’t imagine Lawrence Weston without FIDOS. We have a mixture of second hand goods for sale and also pet food and accessories, kindly donated by local pet suppliers. It’s a one stop shop for many residents who cannot or do not want to travel into the city centre and we know so many of our customers by name-they are like family.
Hassan Salamain a qualified vet for over 10 years is also an integral part of the team, delivering vetenary care to the pets of Lawrence Weston on a weekly basis, free of charge wherever possible.
Lesley explained "Hassan has been a lifeline to many people in the local area who may not have had the necessary funds to pay for sometimes expensive vetenery treatment. They also know that he is available to answer general queries regarding the welfare of their pets. They see him as much a part of the team as any of us who are working in FIDOS’s on a daily basis."
One person who is an invaluable part of the team but who customers may not know as well as Lesley and the helpers who contribute to the smooth running of the shop, is Jock. A former air force chef, he faithfully delivers all the helpers a piping hot meal every day (along with desert) refusing to accept any payment.
If you think you could provide a few items for FIDO’s, please give Lesley a call on 0117 982 2113 (shop) or 0117 950 3342 (home).
Truly a team effort and all to help the animals in the South West and Wales region (and sometimes beyond!)
